Birds of the Amazon

Explore the amazing biodiversity of the Amazon Rainforest accompanied by a bird specialist guide. These guides know the best spots for the hard-to-find species, and can easily identify species by both sight and sound. Stay in one of the finest lodge in the area. Lecture in Quito, for an introduction to the Birds of Ecuador’s Amazon, given by recognized members of the Ecuadorian Association of Ornithology.

Itinerary – Day by Day

Day 1: Arrive in Quito

Arrive in Quito. Transfer to your hotel.

Day 2: Getting to the Amazon

Your Amazon journey starts today with a 30 minute flight over the Andean mountains to Francisco de Orellana Port (Coca), once there you will board a canoe that will take you on a 2 to 2 1/2 hour journey down river to the lodge. Time to freshen up before a walk at the reserve to discover the amazing rainforest ecosystem. (Meals: L, D)

Days 3 – 5: Birding at the Amazon Rainforest

Trail conditions: Moderate Enjoy the following days looking for birds in one of the most wonderful environments on earth. Of the incredible 1600 bird species registered in Ecuador, 587 (37%) have been seen in the Amazon area. That’s almost 7% of the species found in the entire world! Your guide will lead you through a variety of habitats where mixed flocks are common, and generally begin before sunrise to take full advantage of the morning peak. You may even take a box lunch along if you wish to stay out all day, and return only for dinner before heading out again in search of owls and other nocturnal species. Groups will be kept as small as possible (considering 5-6 people ideal). (Meals: B, L, D)

Day 6: Return to Quito

Flight back in Quito. Arrive around midday. Transfer to the hotel, rest of the afternoon at leisure. (Meals: B)

Day 7: Departure

Transfer to the airport for the flight back home or to your next destination.
