Itinerary – Day by Day
Day 1: Arrival in Quito.
Greeting at the airport and transfer to your hotel.
Day 2: Exploring Quito’s historical legacy – Middle of the world & Pululahua Crater Volcano.
Explore Quito; a charming city surrounded by mountains and volcanoes, it not only has the largest best preserved and least altered historic center in America but also one of the most beautiful. Its superb churches store treasures of the religious art and are an amazing example of the most wonderful architecture.There is no question why UNESCO declared Quito the First World Cultural Heritage Site.
Visit the Equator and celebrate the ability of standing at the two hemispheres at the same time. A once in a lifetime experience!! Continue to the Pululahua Crater, one of the world’s largest volcanic caldera with an average base diameter of 8 km. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant with wonderful views of the crater. In the afternoon enjoy an informative talk about the Volcanoes of Ecuador (Meals: B, L)
Day 3: Cotopaxi National Park: Among Snow and Andean Markets
Cotopaxi National Park is located approximately 60 kilometers south of Quito. It is considered one of the most important natural reserves in the country. The Park is home to a variety of different animal species such as the Andean wolf, deer, rabbits and llamas. The majestic Cotopaxi volcano has a perfect snow-covered cone and is considered the highest active volcano in Ecuador (5,897m above sea level).
Combine the natural adventure at the National Park, with a visit to one of the picturesque indigenous markets in the region (except Friday). The markets are a mix of colors, sounds and smells, where local people buy and sell typical Andean products, animals and handcrafts. Overnight in a local Hacienda style hotel (Meals: B, L, D)
Day 4: Quilotoa Crater Lake.
Follow a picturesque road that will take you to Lake Quilotoa, formed in the crater of a collapsed volcano which eruption took place approximately 800 years ago. This 3km wide caldera is filled with turquoise water as a result of dissolved minerals. You can descend from the top of the collapsed caldera to the lake shore in approximately 45 minutes, and return to the top by mules.
Visit Tigua, a small village near Quilotoa where the community members are excellent artists who represent the indigenous life in their paintings. These scenes are rendered in a charming naïve or naif folk style using bright, colorful enamel paints. Return to your hotel. (Meals: B, L,D)
Day 5: Chimborazo Volcano & Indigenous Communities
Visit the Majestic Chimborazo Volcano, the highest summit in Ecuador (20,703 feet / 6,310m above sea level). This protected reserve is an important area for preservation and reproduction of different species of the Andean ecosystem, such as llamas, vicuñas and alpacas. Admire beautiful Andean landscape along the route, considered one of the most picturesque routes in Ecuador.
Continue to a local Indigenous community where you have the opportunity to taste Llama meat for lunch. After lunch return to your hotel. (Meals: B, L, D)
Day 6: Antisana Volcano & Ecological Reserve
Enjoy spectacular Andean sceneries along the trails of the Antisana Ecological Reserve, located on the edge of Amazon and Andes national parks. It’s approximately 120,000 hectares are considered a paradise for birdwatchers due to its various ecological zones ranging from páramo (high grasslands) to the lowland rainforest with more than 70 bird species including the endangered Andean Condor. The snow-capped Antisana Volcano is the fourth highest peak in Ecuador with an altitude of 5,758m (18,890 feet). Continue to Papallacta, a small village famous for its thermal hot springs of volcanic origin.
The rest of the afternoon and night will be spent at The Papallacta Thermal Springs hotel. Enjoy the thermal pools (Meals: B,L, D)
Day 7: Papallacta Hot Springs
Morning at leisure to relax in the pools and enjoy the restorative effects of the hot springs which mineral richness come from the Cayambe and Antisana volcanoes. Spa treatments are available at the hotel (additional cost). Check out from the hotel after lunch and start your trip back to Quito. (Meals: B, L)
Day 8: Departure day.
Transfer to the airport for your flight back home or to your next destination.
