Galapagos Birds List: 94 Birds to Watch for

There are about 60 species of resident (birds that breed in the Islands) Galapagos birds, and about half of those are endemic (breeding only in the Galapagos) to the Galapagos. 

You are probably familiar with some popular Galapagos birds, like Galapagos penguins and blue-footed boobies. They are very easy to identify, as are many birds of the Galapagos Islands.

23 Galapagos Sea Birds List

Of resident sea birds, 8 species are endemic to the Galapagos Islands:

Waved albatross (Phoebastria irrorata)

  • Waved albatross (Phoebastria irrorata)
  • Galapagos penguin (Sphensicus mendiculus)
  • Galapagos petrel (Pterodroma galapagensis)
  • Lava gull (Larus fuliginosus)
  • Galapagos shearwater (Puffinus galapagensis)
  • Nazca booby (Sula granti)
  • Flightless cormorant (Nannopterum harrisi)
  • Swallow-tailed gull (Larus furcatus)

There are also 7 endemic subspecies that are found only in the Galapagos:

  • Magnificent frigatebird (Fregata magnificens)
  • Blue-footed booby (Slua nebouxii excisa)
  • Red-footed booby (Slua slua websteri)
  • Galapagos storm petrel (Oceanodroma tethys tethys)
  • Elliot’s storm petrel (Oceanites gracilis galapagoensis)
  • Brown noddy (Anous stolidus galapagensis)
  • Brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis urinator)

37 Galapagos Land Birds List

The three endemic subspecies of land birds that call Galapagos home are as follows:

The lava heron (Butorides sundevalli) is the only endemic coastal bird in the Galapagos and there are three endemic subspecies:

  • The Yellow-crowned Night Heron (Nyctanassa violacea)
  • The White-cheeked Pintail (Anas bahamensis galapagensis)
  • The American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus galapagensis)

The other Galapagos coastal birds on this list are either residents or are just visiting.
